Protect employees and visitors from potential harm with our collection of radiation safety signs
Exposure to radioactive materials and radiation producing equipment can be life-threatening. Small doses can damage the DNA in our cells, and high doses can cause Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS), Cutaneous Radiation Injuries (CRI) and cancer later in life.
With this in mind, it is critically important to follow the requirements and safety standards set out by state and federal governments and policy bodies like Safe Work Australia.
According to NSW legislation (which is similar across all states and territories), any premises in or on regulated radiation materials must have a warning sign or danger sign clearly displayed in the immediate vicinity of the materials. Corporations can receive a maximum penalty of 100 units (50 units in any other case).
At Safety Signs Australia, we design and manufacture radiation signs in line with Australian Standards. Available in durable materials including aluminium, hi-impact poly, Corflute and Colorbond Steel, our radiation signage is made to withstand the elements — no matter the workplace environment.

Our collection of radiation signage
Radiation signs are characterised by two different designs: warning signs and danger signs. Warning signs are instantly recognisable with black text and a radiation symbol inside a black triangle on a high-vis yellow background. On the other hand, danger signs can be spotted thanks to the word “DANGER” in white text inside a red oval.
We design and print a range of radiation safety signs with varying messages, including:
- DANGER: Radiation signs
- WARNING: Radiation gauge
- CAUTION: Risk of radiation
- Ionizing radiation risk
- Non-ionizing radiation risk
- Laser radiation: avoid eyes or skin exposure to direct scattering radiation.

FAQs about CAUTION: radiation signs
What is the safety symbol for radiation?
The ionizing radiation warning symbol is a trefoil around a small central circle, representing the radiation of an atom.
What is the difference between ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation?
Non-ionizing radiation has less energy than ionizing radiation. It does not remove electrons from atoms or molecules of materials like air, water and living tissue, making it less dangerous than ionizing radiation.
Examples of non-ionizing radiation include infrared, ultraviolet, microwaves, and radio frequencies. Examples of the latter include x-rays and gamma rays. In extremely high doses, this kind of radiation can be life-threatening.
Regardless of the radiation in your workplace, safety signage should be displayed to prevent unauthorised or unprepared employees and visitors from entering the space.
Where should I display my radiation signage?
Signage must be posted wherever radioactive materials are handled or wherever radiation-producing equipment is used. The aim is to warn and protect people from being exposed to radioactive materials.
What kind of workplaces are exposed to radiation?
Radiation is more common than you might think in Australian workplaces. Examples of occupational settings exposed to radiation include:
- Medical and dental clinics (x-rays)
- Veterinary clinics (x-rays)
- Hospitals and outpatient treatment centres (x-rays, CT scans, nuclear medicine)
- Nuclear power plants and support facilities
- Nuclear weapon production facilities
- Industrial operations using radiography equipment
- Research laboratories
- Aviation and space travel (high altitude travel)
- Manufacturing and construction sites
- Workplaces with high levels of naturally-occurring radioactive materials (e.g. uranium and radon).
How do I order a customised radiation hazard sign?
To order a custom radiation hazard sign, simply reach out to our team via info@safetysignsaus.com.au and provide as much detail as possible about your signage needs. Alternatively, you can contact us directly at 1300 220 536 or 0425 229 969 to discuss your needs with one of our signage specialists.
Do your signs meet Australian Safety Standards?
Yes, all of our signs are designed and printed in line with Australian Safety Standards, ensuring you can display them and confidently meet workplace requirements.
How do I choose the right material for my signs?
At Safety Signs Australia, we offer four kinds of materials: aluminium, hi-impact poly, Corflute and Colorbond Steel. Each of these materials has its own unique benefits — for example, aluminium and Colorbond Steel are waterproof, weather-resistant and rust-resistant, making them ideal for outdoor applications.
In most Australian workplaces, radioactive materials and equipment are stored indoors. With this in mind, you can choose from any of our materials. For recommendations and advice, contact us today.
If I place an order now, when will I receive it?
We’re committed to providing fast and convenient service to all of our customers. All orders are made and shipped as soon as possible, so you can expect to receive your signs within five to seven business days from the initial order date.
NOTE: bulk signage orders can take longer. Our team will keep you updated throughout the design and printing process.
Do I need permits to display radiation safety signs?
Each local and state has its own regulations. You may need to check this based on your location.
How do I pay for my signs?
